Actions that should help an organization achieve its objectives regarding effective and efficient operations; reliable internal and external reporting; and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies [COSO, 1994], {SYN: Internal Control}.
Controls can be preventive or detective. Preventive controls help prevent violations; examples include authorizations, segregation of duties, and supervisory approval. Detective controls often produce information regarding an occurred violation to help people understand its causes; examples include management reviews and reconciliations [Turetken et.al., 2012]. .

In management, control is an important function because it helps to check the errors and to take the corrective action so that deviation from standards are minimized and stated goals of the organization are achieved in desired manner. According to modern concepts, control is a foreseeing action whereas earlier concept of control was used only when errors were detected. Control in management means setting standards, measuring actual performance and taking corrective action [Wikipedia].
